The work of Violaine Lochu is an exploration of language and of voice. In her performances, videos, and published objects, she applies scientific procedures onto existing linguistic materials. By having the feminist thought of Luce Irigaray play with the Histories of Herodotus (T[h]race), by applying the phenonema of archeological ruin: erosion, sedimentation, fragmentation on top of the Song of Roland (Remains of Roncevaux), the voice, spoken or sung, defracts into whispers, grunts and screams. She makes use of traditional singing techniques and displaces them from their normal usage, or replays the alterations characteristic of oral transmission (Chinese whispers). The plays which emmerge from these hybridizations, attempt to make the buried layers of language heard and to take them beyond the speakable.
