Living the place: GUILLAUME CONSTANTIN

LIVING THE PLACE,
GUILLAUME CONSTANTIN, RONDES-BOSSES & ECRITURES EN CREUX (2020), CHÂTEAU DE GIZEUX
With the support of Conseil départemental d’Indre-et-Loire

Gathered together by Anne-Laure Chamboissier, artistic curator, about ten artists were invited to live in places* in Touraine from spring to autumn 2021 following a creative residency. The theme "Living in the place" takes on its full meaning at a time when everyone is reviewing their lifestyles and the spaces that surround them. The artists renterrogate what constitutes these places, whether through the prism of their history, their architecture or their function. These works draw a new and sensitive cartography of the territory through their singular view of these places.

The exhibition by Guillaume Constantin is based on old maps from the middle of the 17th cen-tury, known as "sentimental" and sisters of the famous « Map of Tendre ». A group that could be compared to the frescoes in the "gallery of castles" because of their period of birth and the kind of index that they constitute. Re-made by the artist, these maps echo, through the lands-capes, the clouds of feelings they present, to the dissemination in the rest of the castle of his other works, essentially digital prints in two and three dimensions. Sometimes fragmentary effigies, malleable portraits in the form of sweatshirts are thus added to the whole. These fami-liar forms, almost decorative and sentimental in essence, are juxtaposed with others, am-plifying the vast game of stratifications of stories, memories and traces already so present in these walls. Polychrome replicas of Renaissance sculptures, digitally mapped feelings, portraits to be covered, index cards in the form of a leaflet are presented as witnesses of a multiplicable past.

GUILLAUME CONSTANTIN (1974)
lives and works in Paris. Graduated of Ensba-Paris, his artis-tic practice calls for sculpture in all its aspects: materials, supports, space settings, gestures, dis-plays in personal or collaborative projects. By questioning the relationship to the work or object, its collection and its modes of display, he puts in tension conservation and disappearance, visibility and absence. He has had several solo exhibitions, notably at the Frac Haute-Normandie in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, and at the MAC/VAL in Vitry-sur-Seine. His last solo exhibition, Fallimagini & géographies sentimentales, was held in 2019 at the Bertrand Grimont Gallery (Paris), which has represented him since 2011.
